Urban Sensing: Making sense of the City
This course introduces the emerging science and technology of observing urban activity and microclimate through physical and social data. Students explore how satellite imagery, sensor networks, mobile devices, and citizen-generated data reveal the dynamics of urban systems. The course integrates engineering, data science, and urban studies to examine topics such as urban heat, air quality, mobility, sound, energy, and social well-being. Emphasis is placed on how the physical form of cities shapes their function and on the ethical, privacy, and equity challenges of sensing urban life. Through hands-on analysis of real-world datasets, students learn how to transform urban observations into actionable insights for building more sustainable, resilient, and equitable cities.

This course introduces the science of urban climates, focusing on how cities modify atmospheric processes and how these changes impact energy, water, air quality, and human well-being. The course develops a process-based understanding of urban climate systems, from surface-atmosphere interactions and boundary layer dynamics, to urban heat islands, hydrology, and climate-sensitive design. Students will learn how urban form, materials, and human activities reshape fundamental physical processes, and how these insights can inform climate-resilient and equitable urban planning. The course emphasizes both theory and application, bridging physical climatology with real-world urban challenges.
